Phil Metzger is the pastor of Calvary San Diego. Prior to moving to San Diego in 2018, Phil served and pastored in Eastern Europe, mostly in Hungary where he was a missionary, church planter, Bible College director at Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe, and most recently the pastor of Golgota Budapest. Phil is also the author of the book, A Story of Grace: Beyond the Iron Curtain. You can find a list of articles he has written here.
In this episode, Phil and Nick discuss the unique challenges of preaching in an international context, as well as the importance of the mechanics of preaching, such as letting words “hang” in the air and being very intentional about words and stage presence. Phil explains how his experience in theater has influenced his preaching, how he continually aims to grow and improve as a preacher, and the many benefits of manuscripting your sermons. Finally, Phil discusses how he was able to preach up to 8 times a week during one season of his life.
